You're about see a new interview everywhere. Because Google is doing it. It's Vibe Coding. Here's what you need to know:
1. This is not a standard part of Google's process (yet) I reached out to several US based PM hiring managers at Google. Their response? They're not doing this - yet. Google tried it in India. If it works, it may come to the US.
2. This is a part of many company's processes (already) Companies from Netflix to Stripe specifically mention AI prototyping tools in their homework assignments. AI companies like v0, Replit, & Perplexity also live test it.
3. There are three variants of the interview (mainly) My mentees have reported 3 flavors: a. The 45 min vibe coding only interview b. The product design + prototyping case c. The homework assignment mentioning a prototype
4. It's a fast-paced experience & needs structure (now) The interview is assessing your ability to build a vibe coded product feature quickly. In some cases (b+c), you even need to be able to figure out what to build first.
5. This is coming to many more companies (soon) There's a two part story here: - AI prototyping ➜ new PM superpower The companies that enable their PMs with licenses to AI prototyping tools are getting ahead. So they will be the one's hiring the most new PMs.
- Job roles ➜ interview types The PM interview is meant to reflect the PM job. As vibe coding becomes a more important PM skill, it will hit more interviews.
6. Every PM has a new interview skill to master (now) Interviews in PM have always been a bit of a performance. So, you'll need to build a skillset to acing them. Many companies will pick up this interview soon.
