The corollary is that writing should be about things you want to genuinely think through -- not just things you want to have written about. The latter, unfortunately, is the vast majority of writing -- assignments, papers for publication, thought leadership pieces, etc.

The problem description that takes up ~3/4 of most “this thing is broken and we must fix it” essays is usually worthless: It’s usually not an unknown problem, and describing a known issue without the granularity or insight to suggest a non-obvious solution is just bloviating.

Recently read @arkroeber's book about the Chinese economy. The analysis felt distinctly non-ideological, which is rare! There was a lot of "in theory, X works like Y, but in reality Z is the case." I would love to see a similar analysis of the US economy.

I learned recently that the Medicis were the equivalent of centi-millionaires. (Thanks @Ada_Palmer) It's surprising how much less rich the wealthiest people were in the past -- not just in terms of what they could buy with their money, but just in absolute amounts.
