Reddit was a large source of training data for OpenAI. I have to do more digging in the morning. Does anyone know about the legal agreement between Reddit and OpenAI regarding the use of this data? And what rights, if any, do/should Reddit users have RE the use of this data?

Imagine what if because of some post you wrote years ago in reddit, stackexchange, your own blog, etc., you are able to take a cut from the revenue that is being made by o3 or sonnet or hosted service providers of open-source LLMs. If human-generated data in internet is the fossil fuel for reaching AGI, humans need to be able to extract value captured in proportion to their contribution. Instead what happens now is > big tech pay lumpsum to build datasets and strap a license > build a foundation model > strap an API to charge $/month or $ per N tokens > make revenue, raise $10s or $100s B private valuations, share prices rise The human OGs whose data was critical don’t get anything from these behemoth value captures. Naysayers might say “oh we now use synthetic data for training because we find AI superior to humans”. But bro you are just using bigger models made previously from human data to make synthetic data for preparing smaller but smarter models. That just means that the smaller model wouldn’t have existed without the former model and by geneology, the OG human data. Again, human OGs deserve to see a portion of value captured in their wallet. With RLHF being getting more critical for post-training, users are being asked to press thumbs up or down in chatbot interfaces. This preference is being used to improve the model even further which is then used to charge more $/month or $ per N tokens for next edition of LLM. Yet you, yeah you human users, aren’t able to see any of those value passed on to your wallet. It is obvious that having access to advanced GPUs and fossil fuel of human data has been critical for building the most competitive LLM offerings. Yet only shareholders of tsmc, nvidia, google, etc. and vcs, angel investors of openai, anthropic, etc., are getting all value capture. Normie humans whose digital footprint was used end up getting peanuts. Regardless of whatever date the AI pundits or modern-day philosophers have been setting for achieving AGI, the road to AGI is being paved with thievery of property rights of humans on their data or digital actions. Here is the biggest prompt: how do we build a data market without a counter-party risk that is able to continuously measure the contribution of each unit of digital action by a human towards any commercial model’s value capture and share the royalty back to the human? Imagine this being there, we will have a pipeline where any of these behemoths can use human data to make better and better models while also ensuring normie human can harvest due payout from their digital actions. What an wonderful world that will be! Fair allocation. Just a late friday musing!

Spent last week in Seattle at the EigenHQ. It was an emotional one this time; some transitions are never easy. But I’m holding deep gratitude for the people who shaped this journey and left their mark on what we’re building.❤️ On Thursday, we gathered for our managers' onsite. What @sreeramkannan shared there was the update that lit a fire, hands down, the most inspiring update I’ve heard since joining. VERY EXCITED TO SEE HIM EXCITED AGAIN. I also officially joined @eigen_labs last week after spending over a year at @eigenfoundation. Earlier this Q, things weren’t certain, there were a lot of questions, shifting priorities, and figuring out where I fit. But some folks gave me the time, support, belief, and, more importantly, the FREEDOM to push through the fog. Massive gratitude to @sreeramkannan, @jt_rose, @dabit3, @gajesh, @soubhik_deb, @rjdrost, @vishnu_patankar, @ishaan0x and @0xkydo. Each of you has helped shape how i show up. Crypto’s core value lies in trust guarantees. EigenCloud extends that guarantee to computation itself. Here is EigenCloud explained in 4 images. 1. The bottleneck of crypto applications. Ethereum launched with two fundamental constraints: scalability and programmability. The industry spent a decade solving scalability through Layer 2 rollups, data availability layers, and high-throughput chains. Throughput is no longer the limiting factor. Smart contracts suffer from four critical limitations that prevent developers from building sophisticated applications: a. Software limitations (i.e. can't use existing off-chain software easily) b. Hardware limitations (i.e. can't request GPUs for AI workloads, high-performance CPUs for complex computation, or trusted execution environments for sensitive operations) c. Interface limitations (i.e. limited to onchain data or oracle-secured information) d. Consensus limitations (i.e. no control over node communication or agreement) Programmability remains the bottleneck. 2. The solution. Public clouds enable developers to use any software, provision hardware, stream data, and assemble systems from managed services. Blockchains provide tamper-resistant execution but force developers to contort complex logic into constrained, token-centric architectures. EigenCloud enables developers to move expressive application logic into verifiable off-chain containers while keeping only minimal consensus-enforced logic onchain: cloud programmability with crypto verifiability. 3. The primitives of EigenCloud EigenCloud is a suite of developer tools designed to make building verifiable applications as frictionless as deploying to AWS or Google Cloud, while maintaining the cryptoeconomic security that makes crypto applications trustworthy. EigenCloud builds on EigenLayer's foundation of shared cryptoeconomic security through three developer primitives that solve specific problems: a. EigenDA: The most scalable data availability service on the planet. b. EigenVerify: Dispute Resolution-as-a-Service c. EigenCompute: Container Orchestration with Crypto Security 4. EIGEN: The Verifiable Cloud Token The EIGEN token enables EigenCloud's capabilities through its forkability mechanism: the first programmable verifiability token in crypto. Token Forking: EIGEN token's forkability deters malicious stakers by enabling slashing through forking, similar to an L1 token’s role today. EigenCloud Flywheel: EigenLayer created a supply-side flywheel where more stake attracts more AVSs, which generates more compensatory rewards for stakers. EigenCloud supercharges the demand side by expanding verifiable application types (EigenVerify) and making security consumption easier (EigenCompute). As more powerful AVSs get built, novel applications build on them, and as applications proliferate, new AVSs compete for their business.
