I often hear people say they believe the world will be vastly different in 5 years. Yet, many of them plan life and career as if things won’t change much. Why such discrepancy? Humans have bias towards downplaying major future changes, especially the fast changing ones. Perhaps this reflects a subconscious desire for lower uncertainty. I find it helpful simply to acknowledge such biases exist. Over time, I collect my experiences (both mine and friends’) where we underestimated the future changes and do post-mortems to learn from those. When making decisions, I apply this correction mechanism by intentionally overshooting, which often still ends up undershooting the change.
