BTC is the new fiat money. Instead of a durable, long-term cryptographically secure system like ETH has, their last refuge will be an appeal to centralized human intervention to stave off collapse. The only question is which form this intervention will take. Will it be “altruistic mining” such that a few BTC whales eat billions of dollars of losses per year in order to prop up BTC’s security, making it a de facto proof of authority chain? Will it be adding in tail emissions, forever destroying BTC’s 21 million coin hard cap? Will it be a shift to proof of stake? Might be hard with a UTXO-based chain. In my opinion, the best solution for bitcoin is to become an ETH L2, and thereby inherit the security of the most secure blockchain on Earth. ETH currently has almost $90 billion of staking security, compared to BTC’s $8 billion of PoW miner value.
