Moments of the Unknown. 105
July 21st at 11:11 in North Charleston, South Carolina
On our way up to Charleston we stopped into Hilton Head Island to go visit an old schoolmate of Ethan. We made it there right during sunset and burned one down with Charlie, who was an expert organ player. Since we had shot Cassidy earlier in the day we had time to mess around and cruise up the east coast until the clock hit midnight.
We drove through a couple states and reached our apartment in North Charleston half past midnight. We had to wake up around 11 am to check out and continue the drive towards the Virginias making sure we stepped foot in each state as we zig zagged up and down and across the states.
Our neighbor, Beverly, greeted us as we were packing out of the house. She was walking by and she stopped us and said good morning. We asked her about her town and she's lived here all her life. I showed her a few Polaroids from the project and she pointed at Cassidy and asked who this beautiful man was and if he was single. We all laughed, and I asked if we could make a beautiful portrait of her before we set off. I noticed a breeze shaking the moss on the trees behind her. Beverly stood there with all her grace and peaceful gaze into my lens as the wind gently brushed against the hanging greens.
A perfect balance of stillness and motion in a cinematic dream. Somewhere between photography and moving-image, the shot blended together seamlessly. A reminder of the beauty of this series. Not everything needs to be an action, it can simply just BE! Let the camera pick up the small details, the small movements of things like the wind, the trees, her blinks, and my camera shake. The art is the truth of the moment, the proof that we are here. Living and breathing, and nothing more than that really.
We said our goodbyes, and I think she went inside. Perhaps she was working with the owner making sure we cleaned up. We didn't make a mess this time, just a bed to lay our head and feet, and off we went to skip a beat not wasting any time. We drove towards our next home blasting through parks, side roads, and freeways to Charlotte in North Carolina. For a bite to eat at a cool little vegan place called, the Taste of Soul. We were soul fulled up, we didn't need to stop for the rest of the day.
We continued up North to Virginia, then trekked into its western sister state. We kept weaving through green ways since we never took the highways during this entire road trip. The goal was to see the real America. To step into every state and take our time doing so, slowly, without missing a single star on the flag. To understand where we came from and what this country is; One big national park of people proud and free as can be.America, the symbol of democracy.
Surrounded by green and the occasional scene of another national park. It always excited us seeing the big brown entrance signs with those cream bubbly letters. Welcome to the forest guys! Typically smoking while passing through; effortlessly enjoying the ride inside the red, white, and, blue.
