The American Time Use Survey came out recently, giving the most detailed look at how the country spends its days, so here's a quick thread 1st, the share of Americans reading for personal interest on an average day has fallen to the lowest level on record, down 10% from 2003🧵
The amount of time Americans spend socializing continued its post-COVID rebound in 2024, but still remains below 2019 levels and 25% below 2003 levels
Americans' time spent sleeping fell slightly in 2024 but remains near a record high—in total, people have gained nearly a half-hour of sleep over the last two decades
Time spent playing video games continued rising back to its 2022 record high—gaming now significantly dwarfs all other leisure uses for computers
Americans' time spent with their pets remains at a record high, nearly double the rate from 20 years ago. More than one-in-five Americans spend time with their pets on an average day now
Society is also slowly moving towards more gender equity in household work—Americans overall are spending more time in the kitchen, but that's especially true for men, whose time spent cooking hit a record high in 2024 and is up 90% over the last two decades.
Men's time spent on cleaning, doing laundry, and other housework is also at a record high, up 33% since 2019 and 57% since 2003, though it still is less than half what women spend on housework
Fathers are also spending record time caring for their kids, 20% more than in 2019 and 30% more than in 2003
Finally, with the rise of telework & increased time spent on household work, men are spending less time at their formal jobs—employed men are spending a record low amount of time at work, though still much more than employed women (who remain more likely to have part-time jobs)
