The intents-based architecture is a serious scalability unlock. Much more scalable than an AMM-based DEX. Thanks to @NEARProtocol’s sharding design and the ongoing work on sharded smart contracts, the settlement of intents can be scaled with the number of shards because the execution of intents does not depend on a global state. Rather, an intents-based design updates the balances of individual accounts, which can reside on different shards. AMM-based DEXs do not enjoy the same scalability characteristics because every trade needs to touch some global state to update price, so even in a sharded blockchain there is no good way to shard an AMM smart contract. A sharded architecture + intents execution framework (and eventually a sharded intents contract) is how we horizontally scale our industry for seamless DeFi and ultimately high-volume agentic DeFi.
