The ick of his disgrace would’ve stuck around like mildew, while he mobilized company resources to protect his personal reputation
Replacing him was the only way forward

Don’t bother with crisis comms here. The CEO will try to get you to protect him, but it’s not his company. He’s a temporary steward. Your job is to protect the company
The CEO is a professional manager who’s only been there two years, the HR person has been there less than a year, neither is tied to the identity of the company
Preserving trust is more important. Your business model is to handle sensitive data and your priority is scaling, and that’s tough to do with multiple known liars on the senior leadership team
A better comms plan than trying to save this situation:
Andy Byron is on the board, but he’s not a founder and doesn’t have control. The other five board members should replace him
You can then use the new CEO announcement as a reset, and get people to focus again on Astronomer’s actual business instead of its drama

Laughing at themselves was the right move, because humor does four crucial things:
1) Connect with a new audience
Even for people who don’t care about Apache Airflow®, being in on the joke together forms a connection with Astronomer
2) Defuse tension
By joining the ridicule, they’re no longer its object
3) Get closure
They said it out loud, the joke is tapped, everyone can now move on
4) Signal a fresh start
The CEO and HR lady are gone, it’s a new management team, and making light of this shows they’ve “consciously uncoupled” from the past

I’ve joined Cognition to continue to work on the future of software engineering.
I was employee #2 at Windsurf and have worked on AI+code for years. There’s never been a more exciting time and place for it than now at Cognition.
I had a place at Google DeepMind as part of the deal. I won’t go into detail for legal reasons, but I’d like to be transparent about my personal situation.
I was given an offer that would explode same day. I had to forfeit all of my vested shares earned over my 3.5+ years at Windsurf. I was ultimately given a payout of only 1% of what my shares would have been worth at the time of the deal.
In going to Cognition, I’ve chosen a different direction.
For someone who loves software engineering, Cognition feels like home. It reminds me of the energy of the earliest days of Windsurf, where we wrote excessive amounts of code and had excessive amounts of fun.
Really excited to see how we can take the best of Devin and Windsurf to make the world’s best IDE and coding agents.
