Today's proceedings in US v. Storm were largely about establishing the source of various pieces of evidence, including messages taken from electronic devices recovered from Storm's Washington home, and Telegram messages allegedly pulled from Alexey Pertsev's phone. 🧵

Update: Roman Storm responds to the DOJ's attempt to preclude the defense from discussing privacy rights. The defense argues that discussing privacy rights (1) is necessary background for a case concerning privacy software and (2) is evidence of lack of criminal intent.

Roman Storm's defense is so good that the Government is trying to cancel it. The prosecution just filed a motion to stop Storm from testifying to the use of privacy services, after the defense asked the jury how they would feel if someone published their bank accounts on the Internet. “Anyone could know where you live, where you shop, where your kids go to school; Would you feel safe?” Obviously, no one in their right mind would feel safe if their entire net worth was available on the World Wide Web, especially not if this also included every single purchase they ever made. And that’s precisely the point the defense aimed to make on why Tornado Cash is useful. SDNY is PISSED in capslock.
