Why I quit video entertainment and you should quit your bad habit too.
I have a tendency of forming bad habits and quitting them. It might take a few efforts, but eventually I drop them for good. Video entertainment took years and on my third attempt I've finally let it go.
I was watching a gaming video one day and realized that I had seen it before, but I couldn't remember it well and got just as much satisfaction out of watching it again. This got me thinking - what content do I remember? Some days I'd watch hours of the stuff, but I could barely remember any of it. It all melted together and all I could remember is that I had watched something.
If I watched an hour a day (and some days more), then over the course of the year I would lose more than 2 weeks of my life to something that was totally meaningless to me and from which I had no recollection. If you subtract sleep it was closer to 3 waking weeks. Almost a month... just gone.
I am constantly thinking about something so the videos would just help turn my mind off, but in doing so I was not only throwing away the most precious thing (time), but also actively setting myself back on the goals I wanted to achieve because my brain didn't have cycles to process and daydream.
A few months ago I quit video entertainment for good and replaced it with better sleep, reading amazing books, and spending more time with my thoughts. The results are nothing short of extraordinary and my heart and my mind are doing much better.
So many of us have a bad habit that turns off our brains or kills our time. It's especially problematic if it's an ostensibly "good" habit like listening to business and technology podcasts. Doing the "right" thing for the wrong reason is still bad.
Take this as a sign to identify your habit and quit it cold turkey. Commit to quitting it for a month. It might take a few efforts, but you have the power to do so and you must exercise it. Almost none of us are living our full, meaningful lives as we're inexorably hurtling towards death. We have a duty to ourselves to make the most of it.
