The Republican budget bill is not only reckless — it’s cruel. It slashes Medicaid and takes away health care from millions of Americans. It closes rural hospitals and cuts food assistance for our veterans and seniors. It jacks up energy bills. And it could trigger deep cuts to Medicare while driving up the deficit by $4 trillion. All of this to give a massive tax break to billionaires. Working people deserve better.

One of the proudest moments of my presidency was making Juneteenth a federal holiday. It's a day of liberation. It’s a day of remembrance. And it’s a day of celebration. Today, it was an honor to be in Galveston where freedom rang out 160 years ago.

Today, we honor those who answered duty’s call on June 6, 1944, on the beachheads of Normandy. They came to a shoreline that none of them would have ever picked out on a map. They came to a country many of them had never seen for a people they had never met. But they came, they did their job, they fulfilled their mission, and they did their duty. They were a part of something greater than themselves.

Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.

Justice David Souter was a good man—humble, principled, and guided by conscience. As Senate Judiciary Chair, I led his confirmation and saw firsthand the quiet dignity he brought to the Court. Jill and I are keeping his loved ones in our prayers.

Alexis Herman was an extraordinary trailblazer who broke through persistent barriers and redefined what is possible for so many. Importantly, she worked to make sure those doors stayed open for those who followed her. As the youngest director of the Women’s Bureau and the first African American ever to lead the Department of Labor, Alexis tirelessly fought for the rights of every worker and advanced equity for women in the workforce. She was a leader of immense integrity and determination who will be remembered as one of the most effective advocates for the American worker. Jill and I are sending our love to the entire Herman family and to the millions of people she inspired over the course of her remarkable life. May she rest in peace.
