1/N Yesterday in Tokyo we @OpenAI ran a 10‑hour live Humans vs AI exhibition at the AtCoder World Tour Finals Heuristic. We pointed an OpenAI reasoning model at the same brutal problem the finalists tackled—no human help, same rules, same clock. Buckle up. 👇
The AtCoder Heuristics World Finals is a global programming competition focused on optimization problems: tasks where you don't just solve a problem but actively search for the best possible solution. It tests creativity, strategy, and persistence under strict time and resource constraints.
By developing heuristic algorithms to tackle challenging NP-hard optimization problems, our LLMs demonstrate their ability to reason, strategically explore solutions, and progressively refine their approach. This highlights our models' capacity for sustained problem-solving, effectively using intelligent shortcuts and iterative improvements over periods of up to 10 hours.
